‘It’s time to explore
And ignore All these Warning signs’

These could be the words of an explorer or an adventurer. It is a phrase from the title track of the first album of singer-songwriter, Edo Donkers, from Amsterdam. What exactly are these "warning signs?" Are they expectations of the world around you, or demands you put on yourself? Are they fears, sudden occurring memories, or, perhaps, simply calls to be in touch with your deepest feelings.
After years of songwriting and refining his craft, Edo heeds his warning
signs and allows his songs to ring out in the open.. The songs from 'Warning
Signs' were created in such wide open spaces. While the magnitude of open
landscapes and nature can sometimes make a person feel lost, Edo found his
identity among the spaciousness of that landscape. As American songwriter
Rodney Crowell has written:
‘Time to go inward take a look at me
Try to make some sense of life’s illusions that I see
Try to solve the riddle of what it is I have to offer to this world’
(‘Time To Go Inward’- Rodney Crowell)
'Warning Signs' proposes a journey through life that embraces the roads
untraveled. Down with these warning signs, whatever they are! The
overwhelming and brilliant beauty of nature, fighting mediocrity, living with
mortality, love, sex and all the hidden stories of passers-by comprise this
journey.
In pursuit of his songwriting, Edo left behind his demanding consulting job
and life in the Netherlands, and left for Greece. With his guitar, basic
recording devices, and pencil and paper as his only travel companions, he
settled down on the cycladic island of Milos. Surrounded by the expansive and
mythical splendour of the Aegean Sea, his zest for artistic work, inspiration
and contemplation merged into one.
So, a Dutch songwriter writes American influenced songs on a Greek Island.
Consequently, Edo's songs are not connected to any particular place or time
frame. But, if the music world demands a label, " Warning Signs" has an
Americana- inspired, folk/country sound and feel that loosely falls into the
category of "roots-rock."
Recordings of many singer-songwriters cannot be pigeon-holed into a single
genre. Early singer-songwriters from the '70s, like Carole King, Joni
Mitchell, and Jackson Browne, all defied the boundaries of musical style and
were content to be on the cutting edge of the popular music scene. Listening
to the quiet ballads side-by-side with the solid rock songs of those
recordings, you felt the presence of the artist in your own living room.
These are songs that tell the tales of life - the life you thought to
understand just a little bit better, during those precious 45 minutes.
'Warning Signs' from Amsterdam-based, Edo Donkers fits right into that
tradition - songs reminiscent of expansive landscapes; songs that demand your
attention.
